Fifteen minutes later, Ransom led me back down the mountain path. When we came to the spot where Jordan had dragged me, I hesitated.

Ransom turned and looked at me. “What’s wrong?”

There was such a feeling of dread in the pit of my stomach. I felt like Jordan was watching and waiting to pounce. Maybe with reinforcements this time. I told Ransom my thoughts.

“He’s not here, Hailey. You’d be able to smell him. And stealth isn’t his style, you know that.”

Ransom was probably right, but it still didn’t quell my anxiety. I’d learned long ago not to underestimate Jordan. It was too dangerous.

Nodding, I moved on down the path until we were by the road.

He set his backpack down on the ground. “Wait here. I’ll be back.”

“Okay,” I replied, staring nervously up and down the road.

“You should be safe, but if you see anything at all… unusual, holler.”

I nodded.
